You Get What You Work For- Motivation

You want results?? You want to be lean and strong?  You want to be successful? You want a great job? You want to be the top of your class?

You have to work for it!!

We all have dreams, goals, aspirations. But are you willing to work for it? You can already be smart, or strong, or have talent, but if you do not use it to your full potential and work for what you want, you will only go as far as you put toward it.
Make small goals and take baby steps to your overall goals. It will help you see the light at the tunnel. One grand move is much harder to see the achievements, but for every A or every pound, celebrate!!
Give it your all. Give it your passion. Give it your full heart. Give it your 100% and it will pay off.
You can do this!!!

Meet us at the Barre..Sculpting and Toning

Glutes, Core, Calves, Hamstrings and even arms. Great way to tone and strengthen at Barre Sculpt

Barre Sculpt is a great way to sculpt your body in a non-impact smooth flow for the body kind of a way. Barre Sculpt is a combination of slow repetitive ballet moves, and yoga and pilates forms along with tucking your hips and tightening your core. Each class incorporates, a yoga flow at the beginning as a warmup along with some upper body strenthening using light weights or no weights with very small repetitive movements. This technique gets deep into the muscle tissue and helps strengthen as well as tone the muscles. Adding muscle tissue helps to lean out the muscle as well as burn fat during class and hours after as well.
After the warmup and upper body segment, the instructor will move into the Barre portion of class.  During this portion you will find plies, releves, leg lifts, pelvic tucks, squats, chair poses, bridges and much more. Here is where you will feel the wrath of the barre. Movements are very small and controlled with a lot of repetition.
After the multiple sequences of Barre movements, you will move into an abdominal section. During this time, you may still be using the barre, such as the picture above. Pilates based exercises may be incorporated as well to get all muscles surrounding the upper, middle and lower section of your abdominals and obliques. As well as your glutes, hips, and inner and  outer thighs.
This class is for all levels, but we won't lie and tell you that you won't be a little sore for a few days. When first starting out, please take your time and take breaks if needed. Do not compare yourself to the veterans of this class. They started out as a newbie at one time too. You too will be as strong as you see they are soon. Use their experience to motivate you and to watch their form. Let the instructor know you are a beginner, which they will always ask if there are new people in class, and they can also give you modifications if needed.
Results will start to show after just 2 weeks of this class if you are taking it at least 2-3 times per week. These results may vary depending on your nutritional intake, but you will start to see your strength increase as well as your buns and core get tighter.

Flexibility and strength all in one class.
Sweat Cardio offers Barre Sculpt, Mondays 11a, Tuesdays 4:30p, Wednesdays 4:30p, and Saturdays 10:30a.

Yoga Can Clear Your Mind

"Yoga is a way to clear your mind and soul" as many people may say. It is a way to release stress and tension from your daily lives. It is a way to stretch your muscles and your mind outside of its daily routine to help release toxins built up in your body and mind. This may all sound so unreal, that a few positions you put your body in can do so much for you, but it is a fact. Yoga is an age old remedy for healing your body and mind.
A beginner or an advanced yoga person can feel the same or different affects of their experience. A beginner may feel the exterior affects of their movements. Meaning, they will feel the stretching, the relaxation or the invigoration of the practice.  As you become more advanced in your yoga practice, you may feel a more overwhelming power of healing as you become more in tune with your body. Your breath will become more heated as you learn to breath deeper and engage more internal organs and feelings.
Yoga is a great way to clear your mind of all the daily hustle and bustle that is so saturated into our lives. Make your Yoga time, your time. Give that time to yourself and allow the experience of Yoga to heal you.
There are so many forms of yoga that one should be able to enjoy it. If you want a more relaxing, gentle yoga class try a Yin or Stretch Yoga. If you want a more invigorating and harder class, try a Power Yoga or Flow Yoga class. Hot Yoga or Bikram Yoga is another way to release more toxins and get deeper into the muscle. Hot Yoga comes in many forms as well. It is usually done in a room that is from 90 -105 degrees. Read the class descriptions before taking class. A good yoga instructor will teach at all levels so a beginner and an advanced Yogi could take the same class and still feel successful and come out feeling wonderful.

Check out our website for all the Yoga classes offered at Sweat Cardio and Yoga.

Calories-Your best Friend or your worst enemy

Calories can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It is all in how you use them.
I'll first start off by telling you that 3500 calories =one pound of fat gained or lost depending on whether it is consumed or burned.  So if you burn 3500 calories, either by exercise or cutting calories and burning calories you will lose 1 pound. If you were to cut 200 calories from your diet and burn 300 calories a day exercising you will lose about 1 pound per week.  On the other side, if you were to eat an extra 500 calories a day, you would gain a pound a week.
This should make sense. But it also matters how, when and what calories you are eating.
All so confusing??
Your body is a machine. It runs off calories like a car runs off gasoline. What you feed it and when matters too.
Feed it healthy nutritious energizing fuel and it will perform better. Feed it empty waistful non-nutritious calories and it will run slow and sluggish and other reprocussions may occur to your body, like putting the wrong fuel into your car.
Don't be afraid of calories. If you eat the right foods, such as fruits, vegetables, low glycemic carbohydrates, meats, nuts and legumes you will probably be eating the proper amount of calories. These foods eaten in moderation will be low calorie, fill you up properly and feed your brain so that you won't need the unnessasary calories that jack up your calorie count and make you feel unsatisfied and hungry.
Eat small meals throughout the day, preferably about 5-6x per day and your body will be a machine. Burning fat instead of muscle and you will have the energy to not just exercise more efficiently but you will be able to take on your daily tasks more efficiently. You will probably have more energy and get more done.
So in conclusion, your calories are important. Do NOT cut too many out, but Do NOT eat too many either. Get your calories from the right kind of foods and you will be a fat burning, energy driven machine.
If you have further questions about this matter please feel free to comment or send me an email at michelle@sweatcardio.com

It's Not Easy, But It's Worth It. Daily Motivation

Hard work is called hard for a reason, but it doesn't mean that you don't do it because of its true meaning. If it was easy, everyone would do it!!  Everyone would be healthy, fit and successful, but its the strong willed, the determined, the fighters that work hard to achieve their goals.
YOU ARE THAT PERSON!
Get out there and make it happen!! If it is fitness that is hard to stick with, find a partner to motivate you. Take a class that the instructor motivates you. Find a stranger in class, that has a story that motivates you. Right affirmations and place them around your house, car, work place and remind yourself that you can do anything if you put your heart and mind to it. Buy healthy foods so you are not tempting to snack late nights. Buddy with your significant other or a friend to help each other when you are tempted to do so.
IT IS WORTH IT!

Monday Official Start Day-Daily Fitness Motivation

Why is Monday always the day we say we will start something new, something fresh, a goal and task?
Well, today is Monday so do as you say. Start your diet of eating healthy and feeding your body nutrients that it can use to fuel those workouts you are going to start. You are going make yourself a priority. You will exercise at least 4 times a week, or hit the gym so hard you are shredded by January. You shouldn't need a new year's resolution. You will stay on track and make it easier for yourself during the holidays to have a few bites of junk food or your mom's amazing pumpkin pie.
Do as you say and get started today.
Monday is not the only day that you have to get started, but since today is Monday and we all say we are going to start on Monday, then today is the PERFECT day!!

No Workout = Bad Workout Daily Motivation

The only bad workout is the one that didn't happen..We may feel better in bed, or sitting on the couch, during that one or 2 hour time period, but you will feel so much better for the future if you get up and get moving. A light workout is better than no workout. Get out and do something. There will be days that you do NOT want to go to the gym, take a class, go for a walk, train like a warrior, stretch your muscles, shake your groove thing, but you tell yourself you do anyway, and you DO IT!  You will feel so much better and you will never regret it after.

ZumbAtomic -Fitness For Kids!

ZumbAtomic is a kids version of the biggest craze in fitness Zumba! It is a great way to get kids moving and exercising without forcing them to "exercise". ZumbAtomic incorporates a variety of dance moves and extra activities such as tag, red light green light, to make it FUN for kids to get some exercise.
It is shown that the more active a child is the more focus they will have when it is time to learn. They need to release energy and endorphins in order to concentrate and have mental focus.
In this day in age, when computers and other electronic devices control so much of what our kids are doing, our obesity rate in children is rising rapidly. We need to take action and get our kids moving!!
ZumbAtomic is a great way to do this!!
Come try our ZumbAtomic classes at Sweat Cardio and Yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30p.
Bring water and your childs energy and we will do the rest.
It is also a great way to give our parents a small break from entertaining all day long.
We will teach them how to have healthy eating habits and how to use these exercise moves during the day when they are with their friends!!

10 Unhealthy Habits That Prevent Us From Losing Weight

There are many reasons people struggle with losing weight. It could be one or a combination of many of these reasons below. If you notice that you are victim or offendor of any of these reasons, try to fix at least one a week. You will soon see results that you thought you couldn't get. The key is to continue with your good habits once you break them. Take baby steps to fixing  bad habits and gradually it will be a thing of the past.

  1. Skipping Breakfast- We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Many people think that if you skip breakfast you will save calories and you will shed more pounds, but quite the contrary.  In fact, this bad habit adds pounds.  A recent study found that those who ate ready to eat breakfast cereal or even muffins had significantly lower BMI (body mass indexes) than those who skipped breakfast.
  2. Clean Your Plate Syndrome- Serving sizes are much smaller than we place on our plates and what we visualize.  Portion sizes at restaurants or even what we serve ourselves on an average size dinner plate are far greater than one serving. This packs on numerous uncounted calories and ultimately packs on the bulge. Check the label and stick to the portion size, even if you have to put the rest in the refrigerator or take home a doggie bag.
  3. Eating at your desk- Everyone is busy. We eat when we can fit a few bites in our mouth between jobs, picking up kids and keeping our families together.  This is why you need to take time to eat a well balance meal with small snacks in between. Make time for meals as often as you can.  When you designate only the dining room, kitchen and restaurants as your eating area, you are less likely to be distracted and overeat.
  4. Eating Late Nights-  This is one of the most common ways people sabotage their weight loss goals.  They have been good all day and had a reasonable dinner.  Then they sit on the couch and they get a sudden urge to eat.  Others eat late nights because they work long hours and do not have time to eat during the day. Which brings us back to snacking at your desk.  Make sure to eat a well balance meal for breakfast and lunch with a small snack in between to prevent hunger or boredom binging late at night.
  5. Fat-Free Everything- Eating fat free everything is not the best way to balance your diet.  Many people believe that the way to lose weight to is lose the fat from your diet. In addition to making food taste good, fat also makes you feel satisfied.  If you cut out all fat from your diet, you will feel the need to eat more calorie-full foods like cookies and pretzels.  Keep your calories to about 20-30 percent of good fats such as olive oil, peanuts, avocados and fish oils.
  6. Alcohol- Beer, wine or spirits pack calories mercilessly.  Not only does alcohol contribute seven calories per gram, but it has the effect of making you eat more during a meal. If you are going to drink, space each drink you have with a glass of water and avoid any high sugar and calorie packed tropical and frozen drinks. Also, do not head out for a wild night on the town without eating something first.
  7. Skipping the Gym- Many dieters think that cutting calories back  will be the solution to weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.  This may work initially to drop a few pounds, but it will not help you with your muscle tone, your lean body mass and its function to increase your metabolism. It may even cause loss of muscle mass as well as yo-yo dieting.
  8. Sleeplessness- Everyone needs their sleep. Our bodies recover during sleep, burn fat during sleep, reduce our stress levels and insulin levels and restore our cells for the following day.  Lack of sleep causes your body to shut down and to perform at a less productive rate.  Just one extra hour of sleep a night will help you be more alert and have more energy to make your workouts better.
  9. Negative Attitude-  If you want it, you can achieve it if you work hard. This applies to anything in life. Use this motto.  A positive attitude and constant affirmations will keep your mind clear of negative energy and you will stay focused on your goals.
  10. Lack of Support- Everyone needs a support group.  Your support group may be your family, your friends, your trainer, your co-workers or your dog.  Everyone needs someone to turn to.  It is alright to use your support group to talk to and to be accountable to.  Most people work better and accomplish more goals knowing that their loved ones are watching out for them.  Workout with a partner and push each other.  If one of you does not want to come to the gym or wants to eat a Ding Dong, the other one should encourage them to stay of track.
       FitTip

5 ways to stay on track

1. Take a multi-vitamin each day

2. Make small attainable goals and track your progress.

3. Start a walking group during your lunch hour.

4. Log all your meals

5. Drink at least 64 ounces of water.

 Personal Challenge

Eat 6 meals a day.  Break up all of your meals into smaller parts with breakfast, lunch and dinner to have a ratio of 40% carbohydrates, 35% protein and 25% fat. Snack in between with a fruit, vegetable and a protein.  Keep your calories under 2500 for men and 2000 for women each day to lose 1 pound to a half a pound a week.

Building a Better Butt

Building, shaping and toning are the first things people request when going to a trainer or class.  How do I get a nice 'booty"? "I just want a nice butt." Are the most common comments. The latest trend is to have a backside that is round, firm and above your thighs.  It must have started when Jennifer Lopez came on the scene and showed her round shapely curves and flat abs.

The best way to get your glutes firm and round is to train them hard and properly.  Once a week is not going to do it. You will need to take two to three days per week to train your backside to look good.

There are three base exercises that you need to do and 20 to 45 minutes of cardio per day to hit your goal.  Overtraining could become a problem if you are not giving your lower body and core muscles a day of rest in between body parts. That means you need to break up your body parts and work upper body as well so you are not spending two hours six days a week at the gym to get the desired body you want.
There are a few exercises that are standard for training legs.  Squats, lunges, and step ups are your base for your leg days. There are numerous ways to train each one to incorporate different muscle groups. These exercises are complex exercises and will work your entire lower body and core.

The more exercises you can do standing, the better.  Standing forces you to use your abdominals, lower back and glutes (core muscles) for balance and stability. The standing rule applies for upper body exercises as well.
There are many group exercises classes that incorporate lower body exercises that you should be focusing on. Sculpting classes, kettlebell, SPIN, RIPPED, kickboxing and even Yoga.

Squats can be used with dumbbells or a straight bar. Ball squats are a great way to incorporate more thigh muscles. Hold a large exercise ball, or your childs basket ball on the wall.  Lean your back against it with your feet in front of you.  Lower yourself down to a 90 degree angle in your knee.  If your knees are over your toes, you will need to put your feet further forward. Raise yourself back up.  Try a set of 15 with your feet hip distance apart and repeat another 15 repetitions with your feet closer together to work your inner thighs as well.

Lunges are the number one exercise for legs.  Walking lunges, standing lunges, front lunges, back lunges and even step ups combined with lunges. Your heart rate will go up, so take your time.  Form is very important.  Same rule applies with lunges as squats. Your knees should never be over your toes.  If this occurs, shift your body weight back or separate your feet further to perfect your positioning. Press your front heel into the ground as much as possible to feel your glutes working.  Because lunges use all the lower body muscle groups, it is a great exercise to do in between upper body exercises to raise the heart rate and to get your lower body toned.

Step ups can be done anywhere.  Or taking a step class or sculpting class using steps. Make sure the step or bench is not too high.  The knee over the heel rule is true for this exercise as well.  If your are bending your knee past a 90 degree angle before you step up, lower your step or use a different bench.  Step one leg at a time for 15 to 20 repetitions and then switch legs.  You can also raise your opposite knee up as you stand on the bench to incorporate even more muscle groups.

Plyometrics are another way to hit every lower body muscle group and burn fat rapidly.  These explosive movements put high amounts of force and intensity in your workouts and force you to train at a more powerful state. Your heart rate will jump up. Rest in between sets to recover the muscle and allow the same intensity for the next set. Jump with two feet or one at a time by bending the knee and pushing off with your toes. Keep your abdominals tight and land with your knees slightly bent to take the pressure away from your knees.

Last, but never forgotten, are the abdominal exercises.  Sit ups, crunches on the floor or on the ball, twists and reverse curls will strengthen your core to ensure you are getting a balance workout.

Be sure to stretch your legs and lower back after each workout. A tight back and hamstrings can cause future problems.  Exercise is our form of preventive medicine, so use it wisely and it will treat you right.

Personal Challenge
Increase the intensity of your cardio workouts by adding resistance or speeding up for one minute intervals every two to three minutes.  Decrease the recovery time and increase the intensity time each week till you are able to do two to three minutes of high intensity and 1 to two minutes of recovery.  Each cardio workout should be at least 20 to 30 minutes, if not longer.

 Fit Tip

  1. On the stair climber, skip one of every five steps.  Then, take one large step to get back to your normal walking pattern.  This fires up your glutes and makes them work harder.
  2. Triple set all three leg exercises to mix things up.  Your heart rate will go up and you can trigger your fat burning zone after a few sets.  Performing back to back exercises is a great way to accomplish the most work in the least time.

21 Great Ways to Looking and Feeling Great

We all know that during the colder months we tend to cover up our midsection with sweater and jackets.  We tend to stay inside more often and exercise less, which causes us to burn less calories throughout the day.  That is why autumn and winter are the two seasons that cause people to put on extra pounds.  We have just hit the hotter months and putting on shorts and bathing suits may not be as appealing as it was last year or the year before.

There is still time to tighten up your body, skin and mind.  We are going to take preventative actions as well as shed a few pounds along the way. We are going to be conscious of our intakes and our outtakes. You will be proud to wear your shorter shorts and tank tops as well as walk along the beach with just your shorts or bathing suits.

Here are 20 ways to looking and feeling great. Start with at least five from this list right away and add at least two more each week as you feel comfortable.  You will see results and feel much better. You will have more energy and will want to add all 20 to your lifestyle within weeks.

  1. Eat clean food such as lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables and healthy fats.
  2. Eat six small meals of clean foods daily to keep your metabolism charged. This prevents insulin levels from spiking, which protects you against the urge to overeat or binge.
  3. Exercise at least three to four times per week.
  4. Do not skip breakfast. You burn calories at a slower rate when you sleep.  A healthy breakfast jump starts your metabolism.
  5. Reduce calorie intake from empty sources such as processed foods. Simple sugars digest quickly and cause insulin and blood sugars to spike which leaves you feeling hungry more often.
  6. Join an exercise club or form your own with a few friends. Running, jogging, walking, skiing or mountain biking are all fun outdoor winter sports.
  7. Do not go past the point of hunger. This triggers a starvation response in your metabolism and forces it to slow down.
  8. Pack a lunch filled with nutritional choices. You are more likely to eat healthy when you brown bag it.
  9. Eat wisely when dining out.  Ask for no butter, sauces or gravies on your food.
  10. Do two to three sets of 25 crunches every other morning before starting your day.
  11. Do two to three sets of 15 push ups every other morning before starting your day.
  12. Eat four to eight servings of fruits and vegetables a day. They are low in calories and are filling.
  13. Avoid alcohol. One gram of alcohol equals seven calories.
  14. Do at least four 30 minute cardio workout per week at a moderate intensity to burn fat as your fuel.
  15. Eat a healthy snack before grocery shopping and before any event that will have a lot of food
  16. Do three sets of 20 lunges and 20 squats twice a week.  After each set, hold a wall squat for 20 seconds.
  17. Eliminate refined foods such as white sugar and white flour from your diet.
  18. Drink plenty of cold water.  Thirst is often mistaken for hunger. The small amount of energy required to raise the cold water to equal your body temperature helps burn calories.
  19. Do not use food as an emotional crutch. People turn to comfort foods when they feel stressed. Fight the urge with a healthy alternative such as exercise.
  20. When you feel good, reward yourself with a new pair of running shoes, workout clothes, ipod music or share your excitement with a friend. Do not reward yourself with a piece of cake or other unhealthy foods.
  21. Write your goals down on a piece of note paper and place it where you will see it everyday. Place personal affirmations on your goal sheet.
